This is no ordinary sofa to lie down when you need a rest. Part of the Peugeot Onyx Sofa is practically carved out of a 11,000 year-old Volvic volcanic stone found in France’s Auvergne region.
The hand-cut Volvic stone is merged to a lacquered black carbon fiber 10-foot long seat while preserving its structure and natural texture. As modern as it look, how comfortable it going to be is up for debate, as upholstery is not an option if you want to preserve its intended look.
The high-tech/low-tech material sofa weighs a massive 800 pounds, almost all of it is due to the volcanic stone. It took Peugeot design team 70 days to make. The Onyx Sofa as described by Peugeot is the “static partner” of Onyx Trio unveiled back in 2012, a superbike, supertrike, and supercar.Designed by Pierre Gimbergues in collaboration with Peugeot Design Lab, the Onyx Sofa will make its debut at Milan Design Week on April 8th.
This is the first in a line of Peugeot’s made to measure furniture. The hefty Peugeot Onyx Sofa come with a hefty price tag too at €135,000 (approx. $186,000).
