Battery life is almost always the top concern when it comes to gadget, especially smartphone. According to study, an average person checks his or her phone around 110 times a day (that’s a hell lot checking of phone if you ask me). Couple that with the fact that the display consumes up to 50 percent of the smartphone phone juice when use for reading, thus leading to the battery woe we have today.
Basically, the moment you turn it on and starts browsing or do whatever, the juice is going flow out like water from the faucet. Singapore-based tech firm, OAXIS thinks they have a solution to this pain-in-butt problem with the company’s InkCase, first introduced for iPhone 5/5S and Galaxy Note 2. Now the folks is bringing this same goodness to Galaxy S5 users too.
This iteration, referred to as InkCase Plus, is in the form of a folio for S5 and the display that OAXIS is touting is modular, allowing you to use unattached to your smartphone, placed facing the handset or as the cover of the folio. The idea behind InkCase Plus remains the same as the original; it connects to your device via Bluetooth and allows you to transfer stuff like boarding passes, ebooks, maps, take calls and more, which you probably can do without colors, to the e-ink display, thereby conserving precious battery energy. Simple enough? The company claims the second e-ink display will allow for up to 18 hours of reading time and by the nature of e-ink display, the image and/or text displayed will be retained even when there is no power.
The InkCase Plus e-ink case sounds like an attractive proposition to power users, but only if you don’t mind adding 45g weight and 5mm thickness to your thin S5. The firm is currently pitching this idea on Kickstarter, where with a pledge of $89 or more, you can secure yourself one InkCase Plus e-ink case and expect shipment sometime in October 2014. For non S5 users, you can opt for other case (with the e-ink module, of course), but that’s subject to a poll with the phone models getting at least 500 votes will be produced.
